holiday cheer

Merry Christmas from The Price Collection!

Koryusai (Lady in Snow)
This is one of those great Ukiyoe paintings that show the superiority of the brush over the woodblock print.  Koryusai was famous for his prints, but as you can see here, he had an absolute mastery of the brush.
When this painting hangs in a darkened room in winter, it comes alive.  You can actually feel the plight of the beautiful lady half-covered with snow.  Is she waiting for her lover?  Why is she wearing such flimsy garments on such a stormy night?  The worried look on her face creates pity.  We wonder with her.
